"Kwan's Dim Sum, York Mills" - Decent quality by North York standard. But for more polished and above par products, Richmond Hill/Markham are still t

In the hope of avoiding excessive wait time caused by the usual weekend crowd, we decided to head down south to Kwan's for our Dim Sum luncheon with our out-of-town visitor. Besides, we were informed this place uses the minimum amount of MSG...if at all?!

For those of you who hasn't been. Unlike the usual noisy and cavernous Chinese restaurant set up, this offshoot of Kwan's Yonge is relatively small and dainty with pleasant, modernistic decor. Noise level was acceptably subdued.

Menu is less extensive than most of its northern GTA competitors but products offered are quite solid and covered most of the usual appealing array of dishes. Our selection of over a dozen dishes have both pluses and minuses outcome. The good included:
- amazingly good molten lava egg custard buns ( my foodie son commented its the best he had encountered in town! ).
- Moist and juicy, pan-fried Shrimp and chives dumplings.
- Delicious fried savory and chewy dumpling - Harm Shui Kok, - Baked pine-nuts and chicken pie with sweet buttery crust and a delectable juicy filler.
- Nicely caramelized and seasoned Korean style Veal short-ribs,

Sadly, these were offset by some slightly disappointed thickly wrapped Har Gow shrimp dumplings and Rice Roll, fried Sesame doughnut balls with strange, artificial and chemical tasting filler and a slightly over-moist and charred, sans-crispiness fried squid tentacles....to name a few.

The rest of the dishes were middle-of-the-road decent and acceptable.

Service by the all bi-lingual lady staff were efficient and attentive.

Overall, a nice mid-town alternative for those who wanted a Dim Sum fix but hated the drive north to the burbs!
