This past weekend we took advantage of recommendations we saw here and booked a 6:00 Saturday reservation at Martini House in St. Helena (Michelin 1-star). Unfortunately, we were blissfully ignorant of how much time it would take to get from our hotel (Meritage Resort) to the restaurant, and didn't arrive until 6:25. This was a problem, because we were going to have the same time pressure after the meal: we had 8:00 tickets to see The Capitol Steps at the Napa Valley Opera House.
We confessed our plight to the waitstaff, and Tim Seberson, General Manager, took pity on us and intervened with the kitchen on our behalf. The short version of the story was that we made it to the show just in time, thanks to his help and the absence of cops on 29, and did manage to enjoy a truly wonderful meal. The butternut squash ravioli appetizer was memorably stellar.
Given our situation, we didn't have time for dessert, so we returned Sunday after lunch at Mustard's Grill (another terrific meal; best pork chop I've ever tasted) and had a relaxed and lovely time. Tim remembered us and sat us at a two-top next to a window, where we were once again delighted, this time by the Meyer lemon crepes even more than the wonderful chocolate fondant with cherries.
So we enthusiastically endorse the recommendations for Martini House, especially, and also for Mustard's Grill in Napa. We'll be back.
