Trust the Chinese-Malaysians to offer "dim sum", an essentially breakfast dish, for supper! The 60-something-year-old Mee Bon Coffee Shop on Ipoh Road offers dim sum from 6am in the morning till 2am the next day.
I was brought here by my old-timer KL friends who'd been here since they were kids! Considering that they are now 60-something themselves, now *that* is what I call loyal fans!
The steamed pork buns at Mee Bon were certainly not the fluffy, lovely sort one gets from top-notch HK-style dim sum places in KL. Instead, you get the old-fashioned, slightly yellowish-tinged bread texture reminiscent of steamed buns one gets from Chinatown alleyways in old Singapore (or KL, in this case).
The meat filling was tasty, in a robust, rustic way, with thick, oily juices seeping into the dough. The large "bao" came with minced pork and chicken filling, topped with the quarter of a hard-boiled egg.
But the piece de resistance must be the "lor mai kai" or steamed glutinous rice, flavored with soysauce, sesame oil and other condiments, topped with lovely, juicy chicken pieces. Unforgettable!
