Kiki Japanese Restaurant, SF and Woodlands, Newark Review

Sat 1/17/04 checked out Kiki Japanese Restaurant, 1269 9th Ave (Irving)SF. 415-661-5522. It's in the place previously The House. From their website you can sign up to be on their mailing list and they will send you a postcard snail mail w/ discount. I received a 20% off coupon plus they still have a Grand Opening Special menu so it's pretty cheap there.

Aunt got the Combination Box dinner which comes with chicken teriyaki, california rolls, salad, and rice. I tried the chicken and it's good-not dry with a mild sauce. special price $4.99

I had the Chirashi sushi dinner which comes w/ a small bowl of miso soup, assortment of fresh fish & veggies served over sushi rice $10.95 I thought the fish were fresh tasting and good, rice as another poster mention wasn't the best but edible.

rolls I tried: opening special priced Rainbow Roll $4.99, Hawaii Roll(tuna & avocado) $2.85, Rock'n Roll $2.99, spicy tuna roll $2.95?. All rolls were decent and enjoyed-nothing special though.

total price w/ grand opening special and 20% off coupon: $30 for 3 before tip!!

Arizmendi Bakery makes the best cheese roll, pizzas, and Auntie Mabel's Kookie Brittle $1.50 each. Crunchy, full of chocolates and other things I don't know what. Very good.

What happened to Einstein's Cafe? It's closed but is it permanent? Was one of my favorite places to get a good sandwich.

Tues 1/20/04 went to Woodlands, 39203 Cedar Blvd, Newark. 510-494-9727 for Southern Indian food w/ Windy.

I liked #21-mysore rava masala dosa-from the menu (rice crepe sprinkled w/ special spices, filled w/ potato & onion masala, served w/ sambar & coconut chutney) $5.95 I love the crunchy dosa and potatoes. Why are they always skimpy on the potatoes though?

We ordered the full thali $9.95 full of little cups of stuff. The spinach thing was good-I should have asked for more which they were willing to give refills on. Other little things I don't remember but all was pretty good.

#47 masala lassi-from menu (blended yogurt drink mildly spiced w/ fresh herbs & ginger) $2.75 It went well enough w/ the meal, lite and refreshing. But I prefer mango lassi-I have a sweet tooth.

Chai-I liked it. Windy added sugar but it still was light.

Basundhi-custard dessert. It was like a sweet oatmealy dessert. I was expecting a firmer custard like flan or something, but I ate it all anyways.

Thanks Windy for lunch! Good luck on Jeopardy!!
