Key West and Ft Lauderdale trip report - concise

itryalot | Dec 26, 201010:17 AM

Fort Lauderdale - Le Tub - We starved all day and ate the whole doggone burger, each! Delicious and great location overlooking the waterway. Fries are old school and delicious too.

Key West
Blue Heaven - BL(lobster)T Eggs benedict and lobster omelet, fresh juice and banana bread loaf to go from gift shop- Best breakfast we've ever had; enjoyed the banana bread for days! Got in early in the morning and it was packed.

La Creperie - Breakfast crepes and cafe au lait - Cafes were slightly weak, but crepes were just as good as any I had in France. Opens early and we got there early, was full within one hour. Ordered lunch crepe and dessert crepe another time and a grilled panini. Panini was OK, but I would take those crepes over a sandwich anytime!

Croissants de France - Had some great coffee and pastries from there. Great for a continental type morning breakfast.

Key West Express to Tortugas - Surprisingly decent breakfast and lunch considering it was on a boat and they were serving a full house. Much better than we expected; no fine dining or gourmet, but better quality cafeteria food. We just brought some fruit with us.

Turtle Kraals - Happy Hour: good drinks, bucket of bones were great. Oysters OK, but all of the liquor from them spilled on to the tray. Wings were soggy' not good.

Alonzo's - Happy Hour: went TWICE it was so good. Dark and Stormy and other drinks were great; beer shrimp were tender and large; buffalo shrimp were our favourite and very spicy, conch fritters were great, corn mashed potatoes, calamari, raw oysters, addictive onion rings - all fabulous. Our favourite place for happy hour

Kelly's - Happy Hour: chicken wings were very good and margaritas were the best we had anywhere, even went back when they weren't on for happy hour

Half Shell Raw Bar- Happy Hour: drinks were OK, raw oysters were fabulous, conch fritters and calamari were great too

Stand outside the aquarium - The BEST conch fritters we've ever had; went back twice for them

Kermits - Key Lime Pie to die for

Better Than Sex Dessert Bar - cheesecake was.....orgasmic! Had a red wine with dark choc rim and white wine with caramel rim; good Lord, they were great. Also, had a dark chocolate warm torte with vanilla ice cream that was amazing!

Hogfish Bar and Grill (Stock Island) - bike rides there, worth it! Hogfish sandwich, lobster BLT and lobster bisque were outstanding. Would go back in a heartbeat!

On the way down, stopped at Keys Fisheries for great stone crabs and conch fritters and drinks. Also stopped at Mangrove Mama's which was good as well.

Thank goodness we walked everywhere; it is a foodie love fest down there!
