Kerostena Mediterranean Grill in OC- Great!

Joani Macaroni | Jul 12, 200909:41 PM     1

There are a growing number of places offering "Mediterranean" cuisine, but this humble little cafe and take-out place must rank as one of the best for fresh and tasty food, and genuine hospitality. Hubby and I decided to pass up the national "cookie-cutter cafe" on the corner when we saw the door open to this bright and clean storefront in (of all places!) west Garden Grove, along Valley View St., just south of Lampson.

Immedately on entering the otherwise empty cafe, the proprieter greeted us with a warm smile and encouraging words, mentioning that this was the first time their place was open on Sunday. They have been doing business for several months, and this very gracious man immediately temped us with an offering of basbousa, a delicious dessert, or baklava. We opted for the basbousa while we waited for our to-go order. Oh my goodness! What a delicious dessert! He told us all the ingredients in advance (it contains cocoanut, which some people can't eat, cream of wheat, a few other ingredients, and an almond on top) and that it was the Egyptian version of the dessert. Heavenly, and so fresh! He proudly added that everything is prepared fresh daily and no canned food is used.

Well, this was truly food "prepared with love!" - very good, very fresh, and reasonable in price. I opted for the veggie plate - falafel, stuffed grape leaves and flaky spanakopita, served with a minced pickled salad, pita bread and hummus, and he added some fresh garlic sauce - "no mayonnaise." Hubby ordered the Gyro plate, with fresh tzatziki, red onion and tomatoes, flat bread, rice and salad. The meals were ready to go in a very reasonable time, and worth the short wait. Everything was delicious, with the exception of the several julienned pink sour vegetables (radishes?) similar in texture to a jicama. Not my thing, but probably an authentic part of the cuisine - perhaps an acquired taste? Over all, plenty of food - I was as stuffed as their delicious grape leaves!

We will definitely be back, soon, and sample some more of the "dessert of the day" Konofa, Kataif, or the wonderful Basbousa, and the lightest flaky Baklava (which I think he said was available every day). They also do catering.

If you're looking for delicious fresh food and a friendly environment, stop in - you won't be disappointed.
