After breakfast at The Feral Pig, I wanted to check out Kauai's malasada action.
My three targets were:
Kauai Malasadas, outside K Mart
Kukui Grove Shopping Center, 4303 Nawiliwili Road, Lihue

The lady at Kauai Malasadas said she uses her mother-in-law's recipe and has been selling here on weekdays for 19 years.
The malasadas are 3 for $1.50 with quantity discounts.
She let me take a photo of the malasadas frying. But the type of frying oil and the temperature are trade secrets.
The malasadas are available with the classic sugar coating or with cinnamon. I had a slight preference for the sugar ones. So good when hot out of the fryer, but turning heavier and denser once they cool down. There's also a slight metallic aftertaste.
Kauai Bakery is located in a different area of the same shopping center, making these an easy one-two punch.
The idea of black bean filled malasadas was somewhat intriguing. But I skipped over those.
This bakery is known for its cream-filled malasadas. But I did not care for the stiff, starchy pastry cream.
I got a regular, non-filled one to try as well, and I preferred this to the cream-filled. These malasadas are a little bigger, lighter in texture and less greasy, and more like a yeast-raised donut. But they're cold from refrigeration. I bet that with 10 seconds in the microwave, they'd be great.
Tuesday morning I visited Hanalima Bakery. It's across from the community college and in the same general area as the other two malasada sources.
Sadly, at 10am, all the malasadas were sold out and the shelf was bare. I returned on my way back to the airport to see the same again at 11:30am on a Wednesday. Gotta get here early to beat those college students!
Confronted with an empty shelf twice at Hanalima, I have to wonder if it might be the best of the three. If anyone has managed to try one, please chime in.
