Went to Katsuya tonight. Overall, good food and reasonable prices. Fair to bad service, stupid Hollywood-style power games. Nice decor (although not my scene)
We showed up at the restaurant (4 of us) without a reservation. Quite a few tables were empty, and remained so throughout the meal. We waited at the bar about a half hour, and were brought to a table that had been empty since we got there. Maybe its just me, but it seemed like something more appropriate to a Holllywood club than a sushi bar, but maybe that's what they are going for. The bar also charges club prices ($7 for a small Sapporo).
As for the food, it was quite good. We had the yellowtail w/ jalapenos, which was good, but not quite as good as the version at Roku. The crispy rice w/ tuna was likewise good, but not out of this world. The duck skewers were a bit dry, and the eel skewers were very good. The black cod entree was excellent, and cooked correctly with a good miso sauce.
The katsuya roll was basically a rainbow roll. Good fish, but the roll pieces were too wide to easily eat in one bite, and it kind of fell apart after one bite.
Service was very slow, as if the waitress's tables were randomly distributed throughout the space.
Food was $109, booze $27.
Overall, the food was good, but the service and attitude not so much. Might go back, but not sure.
