Kansas City-Stroudt's, Smokebox BBQ short report

steve drucker | Jun 3, 200303:23 PM

Rolled into KC area from Omaha about 7:30 PM last Wed; first stop before my airport hotel was to pickup a takeout order at Stroudt's.

Make no mistake: this is fine grub!

Fried Chicken, pan-fried one inch thick t-bone pork chops were perfect (although my wife--she of the 130 cholesterol and text book blood pressure said she would have liked more salt on the chicken).

Chicken noodle soup (medium density broth, fair homemade noodles) was ok, airline salad fair, string beans cooked with lean ham very good if you like your vegetables cooked well done with meat, mashed potatoes creamy finger licking good, gravy--well, in the interest of chow-dom I tasted it, but heavy gravy is not my thing. Yeasty buttery cinammon rolls were outstanding.

How good was this chow? Well, for the first time in years of heavy travel and chowing, I schlepped home the leftovers the next morning on my flight home.

Note: At 7:55 PM when I arrived to pick up my order, the weeknight wait for a table had diminished to about ten folks or so.

Nuff said. For price, quality and airport convenience you can't beat this place.

At the outset of the trip, hit Smokebox BBQ cafe for a takeout lunch to eat while making the drive up to Omaha. Located At I-29 exit 10, very close to MCI airport. Unfortunately, other than being close to MCI, this place was downhill from there. Dry brisket, humdrum sauce, ok beans and peppery cole slaw. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing?

Next time (in a couple of weeks) I'll look for someplace in St Joseph, about 35 minutes north of MCI. Any suggestions?
