Kansas City questions

In two weeks, my wife and I will be embarking on a brief getaway to explore the feasibility of a move to Kansas City. We currently are in Chicago, but with a young son are considering moving closer to grandparents in Tulsa and Omaha.

1) Any suggestions on where to look for housing for a mid-twenties couple with a 1 1/2 year old? Looking for someplace not in the great western suburban sprawl of KC and with some city neighborhood feel. And, pertinent to this board, someplace with a good chow radius for cheap and diverse restaurants and groceries. Of course it's not Chicago, but I'd love to get some ideas. An earlier thread of this type on the Chicago board was very interesting and informative.

2) We also need a place to take grandmothers for Mother's Day brunch. It's a bit late for this already, I suppose, but worth a shot. At least one of the moms will be happy with Village Inn or some such place, and we might well end up there. We aren't looking for a formal brunch or even a buffet, just a relaxed place with good food, a place where we can linger, and hopefully spend less than $15pp. For this purpose, western suburbs will be fine.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
