After 3 yrs. of sniping/ lurking from reader contributions, I have made a New Years resolution to contribute some of my own material. I travel 30-40 weeks a yr. throughout the Midwest and I'd like to lend my sincere appreciation to all the contributors that have made these visits palatable...
In Kansas City this week- started at Arthur Bryant's w/ a beef sandwich and fries. Beef was decent, probably only 20-30% fat, but the fries were excellent. Long, hand-cut, w/ the self shaken salt clinging greedily to them. While the beef was better than I could get in any other city, it wasn't nearly as good as LCs or even Jack Stack (best for burnt ends, I think). I even discriminate between the 2 based on time of day- LCs is great for lunch and Jack Stack for dinner w/ the onion rings, beans and the cheesy corn bake rounding out the meal.
Dinner was Lidia's. I ate at the bar and the service was very much lacking. Started w/ an app of farmer potato/ cheese pie w/ sausage and finished w/ the gnocchi w/ duck. Meal was average, but perhaps that's my fault for picking bland dishes. If anyone has any recs here, I'd love to check them out.
Tues lunch was at Thai Grill on 7th, downtown. I've been here 3 times now and lunch service has been painfully slow every time. However, the soups are wonderful, and I'm particularly fond of the duck app roll. Would definitely recommend asking for additional spice/ heat here.
Tues dinner at Hereford and meat is meat- OK.
Wed lunch at Los Caldos (731 Minnesota, KCK). Randomly drove by, saw they offered birria- alas only on the weekends. Had the Albondigas, which were OK (although the broth seemed to be Lipton's packaged soup). They initially offered me a pictoral Englsih menu and I had to request another. The salsa is remarkably hot, perhaps the hottest I've ever had.
Wed dinner at Le Fou Frog. Great wine selection by the glass. The escargot app was wonderful, the scallop main course was so-so. I'm starting to realize I've never had a truly magical dining experience w/ scallops- am I missing some preps? Anyways, certainly want to try this place again, as it seems like it has a great deal of potential. Also, anyone had the Kangaroo loin there?- they say it tastes like Ostrich.
