A buddy of mine lives out in the Geneva area. He has been raving about this sushi place for awhile. Another friend of mine and I decided to join him at the South Elgin location.
Sat at the sushi bar with a very long conveyor belt tray, but we were not there for that, although we did pick some items now and then from it.
We asked the chef to prepare some Omakase that allows for the chef to apply his creativity to what you will be served. Ive had Omakase twice, once at Tojos in Vancouver which was incredible but then also at Katsu (on Peterson) in Chicago and I did not see much creativity at all.
Turns out we had both some Omakase items and some house regulars. With my two buddies, the usual menu items seemed to please them the most, while the Omakase items were the hits with me.
Cubed Ahi and slices of lightly seared Ahi over thin slices cucumber/onion with a touch of dressing. Ok a good way to get started.
Tonkatsu Shrimp (egg dipped then fried) w/chili sauce. Good.
King Crab w/the rich egg/mayo mix put under a broiler. Great.
Dragon Roll. Ok.
California roll w/shrimp tempura on top. Tasty. (from conveyor)
White tuna. Good, buddies thought a highlight.
Scallop, served nigiri. The rice was placed on top of a slice of lemon which imparted a citrus kiss to the sushi. Very good.
Soft shell crab roll. Ok but probably would have been better if fresh. (from conveyor)
Rainbow roll. Good, buddies thought a highlight.
Beef Tataki. A seared strip of sirloin, sliced thin with onions, soy based sauce and spices. Good changeup.
The crowning glory of the evening was a Spanish Mackerel. Some pcs with a touch of minced ginger and some with garlic & roe. GREAT way to finish the evening.
We split some Kirin beers and a bottle of cold sake.
My two buds are big teppenyaki fans and think this restaurant is a very good one for this type of cooking.
