I've liked the double rocket turkey burger at Johnny Rockets for years, but lately, had been noticing that the food quality and cleanliness in some of the stores had seemed to be going downhill. This weekend, I had a jones for a turkey burger, so the Missus and I stopped by what used to be the Beverly Hills Johnny Rockets and is now the Beverly Hills Diner (474 N. Beverly, at the corner Santa Monica, (310) 271-227).
Well, all of the Johnny Rockets kitsch paraphernalia is gone, and the food is much better. Also, while it has many of the same or similar items, the menu has opened up a bit, and they're now offering options JR's never had (e.g., an avocado bacon swiss turkey burger, which is really good, btw). Interestingly, they've apparently stopped using the crappy Johnny Rockets frozen onion rings, and the new rings are significantly better. They will add a fried egg to any burger, for those who need a real cholesterol shot.
Service and cleanliness were top notch. We saw an older gentleman behind the counter making himself some chili fries, and he turned out to be the owner -- a very nice man, who said he was trying to do a better business by raising the quality of the food he serves. Based on one visit, I'd say he's definitely moving in the right direction.
