My First Johnnie's: report

Today... got out of class early, and I was feeling a bit hungry and not the least bit adventurous. My afternoon wanderlust ended up taking me straight out of Hyde Park and over to Johnnie's Italian Beef all the way in Elmwood Park. Not too bad of a CTA ride... no more than an hour if you time the PACE bus at the end right. I ordered my usual: beef with hot peppers, fries, pop. To say that this beef makes Mr. Beef look like shoe leather is an understatement; Johnnie's makes just about the juiciest, fattiest Italian beef I've ever had. They've got a great giardinera as well; perfectly soaks up the beef flavor, and adds a nice kick of heat on its own. The fries were top-notch as well, salted to perfection (this is a welcome change from the slop on my meal plan at Burton-Judson dining hall). I finished off with a cup of hazelnut gelato at Massa, about four doors down from Johnnie's. Good stuff--makes me wish Hyde Park had a decent ice-cream place (Australian Homemade, do you hear me?). All I know now, though, is that I won't be going back to Mr. Beef again--I'll take the extra 30 minutes and hit up Johnnie's.
