Couldn't help noticing that Jim reports a trip to
El-Rawsheh in his latest installment, and finds it
disappointing. A while back I headed up to Queens
to finally try the Kabab Cafe and was irked to find
that the proprietors were on vacation, so I went to
El-Rawsheh instead, and I too found it disappointing.
But before long, my disappointment disappeared --
replaced by violent illness. Urgh. Makes my stomach
churn just to think about it. I went a decade without
food making me sick, but in the weeks since I've moved
to New York it's happened twice: once from El-Rawsheh,
once courtesy of the execrable Fava in Park Slope.
Jim's report concludes, "I'll go back another day and
try once more." A line that could have been uttered
by Christopher Walken in THE DEER HUNTER.
(Happy ending time: a few weeks later I did get to
try the Kabab Cafe. A touch expensive, but absolutely
