The Swank Family dined at Retro Burger in Arlington this evening. Retro is on Mass Ave, in the space where Cakes once stood. The place is bright and clean, with photos of Elvis on the walls and the Beatles pumping through the sound system. Think: a less garish Johnnie Rockets.
There's a lot of unused space in the dining room -- only a handful of tables oddly situated; they could easily stuff a couple more tables there to minimize waits.
The cashier was courteous and friendly. Mr. Swank ordered a burger "his way" with chili, onions, mushrooms, and cheese (they offer provolone, swiss, American, or cheddar). I ordered a veggie burger topped with the works (marinated mushrooms, onions, chili, cheese, sauerkraut, relish, ketchup, mustard...do you have heartburn yet?) Young Swank got a burger with ketchup and a strawberry frappe. And, in a moment of weakness, we ordered chili cheez fries.
The wait time was a bit long, but we chalked it up to being new. Our food was delivered tableside with a smile, and we promptly chowed down. Burgers were delicious but messy. Definitely ask for a fork when ordering! I had to go hunting for one. The fries were drenched in mello yellow cheese sauce, which is how cheese fries should arrive, in my humble opinion. The chili was unremarkable. Veggie burger tasted good but came apart easily, revealing large hunks of corn (?).
Strawberry shake was terrific.
We'll definitely return -- it's a jazzier alternative to Madrona Tree down the road.
