What The Jester Had For Dinner: Chino Bandido, Chandler AZ

JK Grence (the Cosmic Jester) | Jun 20, 200507:32 PM     5

Chino Bandido is an eatery truly like no other. They specialize in Mexican/Chinese/Caribbean combination plates. This isn't like a mall food court where one section is all Mexican, another Chinese; instead, all three cuisines exist on a single plate. Egg foo yung and a machaca burrito with refried beans and chicken fried rice? Sure! A sweet and sour chicken quesadilla and Chinese BBQ pork burrito with Cuban black beans and jamaican jerk chicken fried rice? Only at Chino. I'm working my way through all of the possible dishes, and so far absolutely everything has been wonderful- the jerk chicken is quite spicy but still very flavorful, the Jade Red Chicken (their version of sweet & sour) hits all of the right notes, machaca that's tender, juicy, and filled with all kinds of deliciousness. To top things off, every meal comes with a snickerdoodle cookie (or if it's a weekend, you can get a special cookie, most often the dangerously delicious chocolate Volcano cookie). After eating at the new location, I have realized the original location (at 19th Ave and Greenway) has gone downhill some, thankfully only from "WOW!!!" to "Hey, this is pretty good", since both times I've eaten at the new one I have left deliriously happy. New additions to the new Chino include ice cream- 8 ounces of soft serve with any of 8 flavors swirled in for two bucks. I'll try it one of these days as soon as I tell myself not to go to Angel Sweet across the street. The other new thing... breakfast. This is on my must-try list just to see if something as crazy as jerk chicken waffles is as good as the employees say it is.

The one downside of the new Chino is that it is somewhat hidden, deep on the southeast corner of Dobson and Chandler Boulevard, behind Cyclo. If you have a hard time seeing it, turn right at the Blimpie east of Dobson and drive straight past it, Chino will be ahead on the left. BONUS TIP: There is lots of parking available on the back side of the restaurant, much of it right next to the doors.
