Folks may want to try out Jesso's, a new place at 9th & Washington in Downtown Oakland (Old Oakland). I'd describe it as a sit down (and take out) Southern-style fish and chips place--it serves snapper, catfish, oysters, etc., as well as salmon. They also have a little take out place up by 27th St. near Oakland's Pill Hill.
I've only eaten there twice, solo, so I'm hesitant to endorse the food totally. What I had each time was good--once a rather messy Catfish Poor Boy burger (shouldn't that be Po' Boy?). I took the $1 extra grilled option on that one.
On my second visit, I had (breaded) salmon fillet, neither raw nor overcooked inside. Instead of chips I got potato salad. But I don't like the finely grated version they gave up. When the waiter saw that, he offered a substitution, so I got a perfectly satisfactory little cup of cole slaw. High marks for that. Service has been really good, in fact, the owner has inquired if I liked the food, etc. It hasn't been because they're empty (they're not, at least not at lunchtime), it seems to be because they're friendly.
This site, at the northwest corner of 9th & Washington, at the edge of the relocated Housewives' Market, has been a graveyard of restaurants, but I hope this one makes it.
