Jeb’s Swedish Creamery is located west of Highway 99, away from the downtown area, in a suburban strip mall. I was here following up a tip from “susancinsf”.
Jeb’s uses Challenge Dairy milk and no eggs in the housemade ice cream. Many flavors feature locally grown seasonal fruits. Not sure what’s Swedish about it, but I can say this is a creamy and dense premium style with moderate overrun and well-balanced sweetness.
Before making my selection I sampled the seasonal pumpkin pie flavor. Available with or without addition of crunchy, butter pieces of crust, this was stellar. I had tasted four different pumpkin ice creams within the week, and this was my favorite of all. I also tasted the summer plum and found it a bit too faint. Then I tried the huckleberry and fell in love. This ice cream flavor expresses the tart and mildly astringent character of wild huckleberries so directly. Unlike my usual attempt to squeeze two flavors into a single serving, I wanted only one this time, my one true huckleberry. A single, including tax, is $2.40 and is a huge serving with three and a half scoops.
As it got close to lunch hour, the other customers in the shop included a senior enjoying a hot dog for lunch and some teens ordering burgers and shakes for lunch. The young woman behind the counter was sweet as can be, asking me if I wanted a glass of water and then brought it to my table. And since this was a road trip, I’ll mention that the shop has a nice restroom.
I had bypassed Baby Cakes & Ice Cream http://www.babycakesicecream.biz/ that sells Hanford’s Superior Dairy ice cream downtown because it wouldn’t open until 11:30am. I’m glad it wound up that way as Jeb’s ice cream is much better and even costs less than Superior Dairy’s.
