In case there are more Japanese souls in the East bay who don't want to make the drive to Mitsuwa & beyond, there is a wonderful Japanese grocery store in Pleasanton! It's called Nakayama Market, and it's in the Valley Plaza, on the corner of Valley and Santa Rita. They've recently added frozen fish and such, as well as a whole slew of other things - I can get by without making a trip to Mitsuwa now on most occasions. It's like a Japanese con-bini (yes, that's a shortened word for convinience store, but really, MUCH, MUCH more for those who haven't been to Japan).

Also, in the same plaza is a Svenson's ice cream shop that serves decent pho. It was the oddest thing when we walked into the shop sometime last year - a traditional Svenson's with old-school coffess shop decor, filled with Asians slurping noodles. I just never expected that in a Svenson's...
