Jane, the cafes, have been joined by Jane the Bakery, opened December 7. http://www.chowhound.com/post/cafe-gr... I had a chance to try the new bakery-cafe for breakfast at the two-week-old point. Funny to look back on my old post because somehow I wound up ordering the same things on this outing.
Some of the pre-opening press described the venue as an airy cafe. More like a cavernous production bakery that happens to have two small tables and a narrow counter with a total of 13 seats. This isn't really a place to linger or study (and there's no customer wifi). What it does have though is a small lot for off-street parking.
Coffee is roasted in-house to a darker end point than the third wave roasters, lending more chocolatey depth but nothing bitter even in the espresso roast. Clover organic milk made a creamy microfoam.
The scrambled egg sandwich featured a thick layer of omelet, more cheddar cheese and the signature tomato chutney pressed between seeded multi-grain bread. Grilled beautifully, this was more substantial than the earlier example.
Ordered to eat-in, my sandwich was served on an outsized metal plate far too large to rest securely on the eating counter. This snapshot of my neighbor's pastry on the 6" wide counter shows the unstable situation. I had to ask the kitchen for a take-out box that could be supported by the narrow ledge or risk losing my food.
Breakfast pastries in the case looked scrumptious and some samples were available at the counter for tasting. But once I spotted the kouign amann, choosing was easy.
Darker and crustier than typical around here, this had a good amount of caramel on the bottom even though some of the sugar on top was still white and granular. Heavier, thicker layers that were not so croissant-like, moist in the middle and rich with butter, this was a satisfying example.
Anyone else tried it yet?
