This message is probably going to look a little ignorant. But I would appreciate advice on what wines to order in michelin-starred restaurants in Italy. My problem is I tend to have a lot of meat and seafood, whilst my girlfriend mainly has fish and vegatables. We also both much prefer red wines to white. In France, I have no problems as I know quite a lot about the wines there and many Burgandies offer a safe match for these types of food. However Italy is more difficult and so it would be good if anybody could give me examples of really good red italian wines (price not really much of an issue relatively - although obviously nothing stratospheric)that could also bridge these gaps. There are some good Italian pinot noirs but other suggestions would be very very gratefully recieved. I usually have some discussion with the staff before ordering and it would be good to have some idea of where I should be looking. Apologies for the ignorance of this message but it would be really good to have some ideas. In trattorias and more casual places it is easy as I usually just have the house red or something similar - as this what the locals do - but in fine-dining restaurants it would be good to have a few more clues.
