Best Italian in Greater Newark Area?

Ike Crichton (a.k.a. Ka D'argo) | Mar 14, 2002 03:03 PM

I've been living in N. Newark for about 1.5 years now but I haven't gotten around to finding out if there's anything decent to eat in Newark besides all the Spanish/Portuguese stuff (and in that genre, I stick with Casa Vasca, as a previous post of mine indicated).
I'm big on Asian and Middle Eastern food, and there doesn't seem to be anything of that type in Newark at all besides the usual Chinese take-outs.

Are there any really good (or at least well above-average) Italian places here? After all, the Bloomfield Ave. area is (was?) a big Italian-American neighborhood. I've found an outstanding bakery called Giordano's in Belleville near the Newark border, but what about actual restaurants? (And is there good, or just above-average, pizza?)

And if not in Newark, then how about nearby? Say, within 15-20 miles or so? My parents and I like a little place in Montclair called Leone's Kitchen, which is just across Blmfd. Ave. from Mexicali Rose, but what else is there? I'm not normally big into Italian myself, but the 'rents are coming for another visit soon.
