ISO something "special" in Upper West Side

Friends,

My gf has been in town for the last week and I will be joining her tomorrow for a few days and we are looking for suggestions. She is about to submit her almost finished dissertation and hasn't had much time to focus on food, and has had trouble finding good stuff on the run. We come to town a few times a year, and have really appreciated many of your tips, and are hoping to get a little more specific this time.

Our deal: we'll eat anywhere and anything (with the exception of Mexican- we live in San Diego), and have made the rounds in the Village with Momofuku (loved the buns etcetera) and Blue Hill- and enjoy many of the better known places near our apartment on 106th and Riverside (really dig Greengrass for breakfast). Budgets are a bit tighter these days, and so we are looking for anything up there that you would recommend as "special." That is, something that you would recommend to healthily-jaded visitors (foodwise) that would not necessarily mean a drawn-out, lingering-for-hours kinda of meal with a $100 tab at the end. Even bars that have some kitchen marvels would be fine.

Thanks in advance. Cheers!

(just noticed two similar threads after hitting "post"- forgive me, but still interested in general steering if you've the energy)
