Island style: great Montclair Carribean

Stumbled onto a really fine Carribean restaurant back ing the neighborhoods in Montclair Saturday night, Island Style. It's owned by a Trinidadian woman who seems to have her family mostly working there. It doesn't look like much, but the food was blow away. REally cheap, with entrees running $7-$11. It's BYO.

Service was a little spotty, but that's because we were being waited on by the owner's 16 year old niece. "What's Island Stlye chicken?" "It's chicken with Island spices on it." Not enough information, thanks. But when it came, it was great. Grilled with a really tasty sauce. I have steamed whole snapper in some sort of sweet sauce that was really tasty. They have goat roti, a good stew, callalloo (a sort of spinich soup.) The owner, Irene was charming as well.

Address is 33 Walnut St. (at Pine) about a block from that new shopping center with the Blockbuster Video on it. Well worth a try. We'll be going back...
