Scratch Mr. Thai on Ashland off the list of possible Isaan places. I dined on the "special" noodle soup (the subject of some speculation earlier) last night. It amounted to a sorry attempt at "pan-Asian" as far as I could tell. The ingredients were: rather bland chicken/pork broth, a few morsels of boneless chicken and pork, "fish ball" of the Japanese ready-made variety us. served w/ udon, and a few slices of celery. The soup came with a side of chewy rice noodles, identical to those served with pho. I ordered dumplings, which turned out to be the ubiquitous freezer-to-steamer sui mai. I also ordered Penang curry as a back-up, and it was pretty good. The woman at the counter said the owners were from "near Bangkok." In all, nothing to get excited about.
