Possible Interesting List of Promising Chinese Restaurants

James G | Mar 21, 2004 10:13 AM

The other day while having dinner at China Star, my current favorite DC area Chinese restaurant, I saw a Chinese couple arrive toting the March 19 copy of the New World Times, a free Chinese newspaper, open to page 17 where there are nothing but ads for Chinese restaurants. The largest ad on the page is for China Star, touting the fact that their chef is a gold medal winner. This ad is just above one for Joe's Noodle House, which lists a variety of the dishes they consider their specialties.

There are a number of other listings on this page, which I post here without any claim to have tried them. If anyone has, please report whether they are worth a visit:

**Shanghai Cafe (promotes their Shanghai Soup Dumplings; 12044-D Travilah Road, Potomac);
**Jasmine Garden (their chef used to be at the Shanghai Hilton; they seem to have a lot of Sichuan small dishes; Yorktown Shopping Center, Arlington);
**Chuan Tsai Wang {no English name, just like China Star in this newspaper; means Sichuan Food King} (Sichuan dishes, including Yuan Yang (Mandarin Duck) Hot Pot, Country Style Young Chicken, Beer Beef Casserole, etc; 660 S Pickett St, Alexandria);
**Tony Lin's Kitchen (seem to have a lot of seafood dishes; 12015-G Rockville Pike, Rockville);
**Xinhua Tianxiang Caiguan {no English name; implies heavnely Hunan-style food} (lots of Hunan specialties, along with more familiar Sichuan dishes; 12937 Wisteria Drive, Germantown);
**Dragon Chinese Restaurant (lots of handmade dumplings and other small dishes, including tea eggs; 227 Muddy Branch Road, Gaithersburg)

As noted before I have only been to China Star and Joe's, so I do not make any representations about the quality of the other locations.
