Inka Trails (Claremont) - Yummy Peruvian

My husband and I took two of our boys to Inka Trails for lunch today before a walk around Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens in Claremont. The restaurant wasn't all that busy when we showed up after one...there were about two other tables finishing their meals. We were kindly seated immediately by a super helpful hostess who offered specials and drinks.
Lunch specials here are great....they have a choice of four each day that include either a cilantro chicken and rice soup or green salad and dessert...all for $11.
The hubby and the kids got the specials (lomo saltado for him, beef empanadas for the kids). The soup was delightful. Flavored with cilantro, the broth was simple yet savory with shreds of chicken and rice. The kids (who are usually picky) loved the soup. The lomo saltado was wonderful...the meat cooked well with a good mix of onions, french fries, and tomatoes. The beef empanadas were a big hit with the kids. I had the saltado de mariscos, and that had calamari, mussels, and shrimp in addition to the onions, fries, and tomatoes. Seafood was exceptionally cooked, and I only wished that there were more tomatoes and that the sauce was a bit more rich in depth of flavor...this was the lightest Peruvian dish I'd ever had.
We also ordered the fried plantains...which I loved and ate as dessert when the kids barely touched theirs. The kids and hubby got flan with their meals...and the caramel sauce was good, but the flan was super rich and dense...unlike any other flan I've ever tried before...not sure I would order the flan on my own.
Service was great, and everyone was happy and full of energy for a walk around the botanical gardens afterwards.
