Indiana Farmer v. Monsanto heads to The U.S. Supreme Court

lynnlato | Feb 19, 2013 04:24 AM

Vernon Hugh Bowman found a loophole in the Monsanto round-up ready soybean seed patent and ran with it. He bought round-up ready resistant soybeans from a grain elevator/local farmer and planted them. Monsanto caught wind of it and sued him and won. An appeals court upheld the previous decision and awarded Monsanto $84,000+ dollars. The Supreme court has decided to hear the case. At issue is this: whether patents on seeds — or other things that can self-replicate — extend beyond the first generation of the products.
