India Garden Reno Revisited

Every time Reno area chowhounds have gotten together this restaurant has been the subject of discussion. I confess to being less than enthusiastic when asked my opinion of it. However, in the interest of fairness I must admit to a great lunch there today. I was in the neighborhood, and needed sustenance for a serious of horrendous errands that included the DMV, looking for a bathing suit, and exchanging something at Best Buy. I decided to give the buffet at India Garden a try, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

There were several unusual dishes on the lunch buffet today. The soup was tomato/coconut: light and very tasty. I had thirds! The pakoras were made from whole poblano peppers; they had a real bite. My husband would have loved them! There was an unusual vegetable korma as well: sauced with ground cashews and almonds and not much cream. Very nice flavor. I'm sure some of the vegetables were frozen at one time, but the sauce made up for it. Another dish I enjoyed was a potato/green pepper mix: My husband makes something very similar that he calls "Indian home fries." Chickin Tikka and Tandoori chicken were available, but I stuck to the veggie dishes today. With fresh (and excellent) garlic nan, two types of chutney, salad and rice I was stuffed. I didn't try the desert: It was a neon green fruit pudding. Even if it hadn't been green I probably wouldn't have eaten it; I find Indian deserts too cloying.

So, I take back any less than nice comments I've previously made about the buffet here. I think for 6.95 its a real bargain. Check it out. India Garden is in a strip mall at the corner of Virginia and Mount Rose streets.
