Had dinner at the Independent tonight and it reminds me that we need to stop in here more often than we do. We sat at the dining room side bar around 8 pm and while there was a raucous crowd on the bar side, the dining room side was quiet and comfortable.
Started off with a Harpoon for him, a cheap, highly drinkable Mouvedre for me. He had the pressed chicken sandwich and I had the moules frites. We both had the same fries and I have to say, they are amongst the best we've had in town. Wonderfully spiced and crispy - on the thin side. He said his sandwich was good, and the mussels, while I ate them all, were passable, nothing great. But it was just what we want in a weekday meal. I had a Guinness with my meal, which I thought was very nice - good temperature, creamy head. Last but not least, bartender was attentive - interjecting when she needed to and when we wanted her to. Not one bit overbearing, but instead, friendly and professional.
It's too bad Union Sq. doesn't have a T - I think it deserves bigger crowds. Nothing revolutionary here - solid pub food and comfortable surroundings. Perfect food/atmosphere by which to watch the Olympics.
