In Turkey a number of restaurants had on the table a small dish containing a spice mix. I was told to dip bread in olive oil, then in the spice mix. It was quite hot (obviously containing quite a bit of chile), aromatic, and very tasty. Our guide didn't know the name of it, but told me it contained perhaps 20 or 30 different spices.
Purely fortuitously, I found the exact mix in the Istanbul Spice Market. Unfortunately, since I and a number of my friends have become addicted to this stuff, I didn't buy anywhere near enough of it. I've taken it to two Turkish restaurants and to Kalustyan's in Manhattan and been told it's neither Baharat nor Raj el Hanout, but no one has been able to tell me what it is or where I might be able to buy more of it.
I would be eternally grateful if anyone here could help me out.
