Ice cream in Mastic

Jeremy Osner | Sep 24, 2001 09:51 AM

Passing through Mastic, L.I. (a town that ought to have a chewing-gum factory but does not) this weekend I tried out the World-Famous Ice Cream Cottage, and was quite happy with it. They take an approach to chunky ice cream that I have never seen before; the chunks (chocolate, candy, caramel, etc.) are folded into a plain ice-cream base which is either chocolate or no-flavor white. I had peanut butter fudge, which is peanut butter fudge, caramel and chocolate folded into the white base. The base was nice, not real sweet and pleasantly creamy. The fudge was a bit too sweet. The chocolate and caramel were good. All in all a nice combo though I wish the fudge had not been so sweet, you couldn't really taste peanuts in it. The s'more flavor, broken graham crackers and marshmallows folded into the chocolate base, looked pretty intense. We also stopped at the diner in Center Moriches but nothing to report food-wise...
