After the last weeks L.A. times section about L.A. Italian, we had a few posts asking about Café San Gennaro, to which I complained in each one that I am forced to eat there every month. That I've tried most everything on the menu and it's all pretty bad. But the Time article mentioned only the pizza
. Further, another wonderful hound John Gonzales mentioned the pizza and ordering extra crispy. I realized I had never ordered the pizza and ditched my plans to get some Honey's fried chicken before the meeting and ordered their Village Special pie, regular crust, extra crispy
What came out was BEAUTIFUL. A 9 inch pie with huge slices. The Village Special is their 'kitchen sink' pie with Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Eggplant, Pepperoni, Sausage, Meatballs and lots of other yummy things. Each one of these ingredients was generously sliced and there was plenty of everything. Further, nothing was cooked into complete mush. The mushrooms, tomatoes and eggplant completely held their own again meatballs and sausage! When I took the first bite, it was a true explosion of flavors. Nothing overpowered, and the crispy thin curst served as the perfect 'plate' for which to eat the mix of great veggies and meat
Now, most people wouldn't like this much going on with their pizza (I'm not one of those ;D), but based on what I saw with the folks who ordered simpler pies, they also add plenty of those singular toppings as well.
So thanks so much again hounds. You have COMPLETELY turned what was a monthly chore, into something Im totally looking forward to! :D
