Just had my second hot cross bun of the year today, from Destination Bakery on Chenery St. in SF. It's $1.40, and a nice size - I'd say about three inches across. Studded with raisins, it has a real taste of citrus zest, and in fact, you can see tiny flecks of orange zest in the dough. Topped with a nice vanilla icing cross, it's quite delicious. To make it perfect, I would wish for a slightly lighter, yeastier dough, but it was far superior to the AWFUL HCB I had a Victoria Pastry a few weeks ago, which was full of cheap supermarket-style chopped red and green glaceed "fruit" and, though huge, cost $2.75.
