I got a hot cross bun from Victoria Pastry in North Beach this morning. Rather large, it costs $2.75.
It is filled with cheap, chain grocery store-style chopped red and green glaceed, unidentifiable fruit, and a few small white raisins. I thought the bits of red and green looked like diced red and green bell peppers! The "cross" is a thick ooze of a gelatinous custard, with none of the butter and cream flavor of a good custard. The bun itself is fairly dense, and lacks the good flavor of a good yeast-risen bun.
Not worth the calories or the $2.75, in my opinion.
