Hot bean paste

A recipe for grilled "firecracker" chicken thighs that I want to try calls for hot bean paste for the sauce. In the past, the pastes I've tried were either WAY too salty, or oddly soapy. I live near any number of Asian markets. Can anyone steer me toward the best hot bean paste?
