Hostess and/or holiday gift(s) for Christmas visit

eeeses | Dec 7, 2011 08:08 PM

I'm visiting the boyfriend's family for Christmas (a few days before and through the weekend), and was wondering about gifting etiquette.

I'll be staying with the boyfriend at the parents', so I will definitely be bringing a hostess gift. I'm contemplating a foodie basket of local preserves/jams, goodies, etc, but am open to other suggestions.

The confusing part: do I also get the parents Christmas gifts, too? I'm giving the boyfriend gifts, of course, but should I get something for the parents? I've met them before and they seem like the eternally-proper-always-planning-ahead types who'll probably get me something thoughtful (despite both being professionals who work, like, 500+ hours a week). So, I should get them something, right? But is it one gift for both parents, or individual gifts for mom/dad? And what? Any ideas? I was going to stay away from foodie/wine stuff (since I'll be bringing a hostess gift), so...a book? There has to be something better! Suggestions would be very welcome.

Please help (prevent me from making some terrible faux pas that will lead to them setting up their son with some well-mannered society gal, instead)!
