Stopped at fairly new Hong Xuong Bakery on Argyle yesterday, was a bit late in the day and much of the fresh baked and fried goods seemed to be depleted. They did have premade banh mi and both the fried taro/shrimp cupcakes and deep-fried shrimp baguette that were recently discussed on the Chowboard.
I had just eaten a wonderful lunch at Menagerie with my wife, where we canoodled over duck confit grilled cheese sandwiches and soft shell crab po boys so I was not hungry in the least. By the time I tasted the fried taro and shrimp baguette they had been in the refrigerator for 24-hours, I am sure the flavor and texture are quite good hot from the fryer.
Interestingly when I was in the store I recognized one of the men helping set up a display, we chatted a minute or so and then it dawned on me that he was the owner of Hon Kee. He recognized me as a long time customer of Hon Kee and told me that this was his sister and (I think) niece's shop and that he had helped them get started in business.
He went on to say that they were building a large kitchen in the back area and would have a much expanded menu as soon as the kitchen was complete.
