Wonderful Dim Sum at Maxim's. Yes, it's a chain, but the quality (and variety) far exceeded the other dim sum I tried. It's really quite excellent. Lei Garden was disappointing, as was Water Margin (which is not only mediocre but tacky). Xiao Nan Guo (the Shanghainese chain), on the Hong Kong side was good, but not outstanding. Better xiao long bao at Crystal Jade (another chain, in the IFC mall). Not as good as at Din Tai Fung in Shanghai, but the best I had in Hong Kong. Also excellent at Crystal Jade are their la mien and wontons in chili oil. I followed a chowhounder's advice to the noodle lady in Shek O, and she was well worth a visit. Wonderful noodles and an enchanting experience, from the bus ride to the last spoonful. Da Ping Huo certainly lived up to its billing; perhaps my only complaint is was a lack of variety in flavors: the la pepper got worked and worked and worked some more! But still terrific.
