Homegrown Bagels in Sonoma is the real deal!

c oliver | Dec 25, 201003:45 PM

We're back in Sonoma for Christmas and bought some gorgeous lox at Sonoma Market. We get spoiled by NYC bagels which we bring back but are now out of. I googled and found Homegrown Bagels which is in the Whole Foods shopping center. They've been in business since 1978 and a number of people on Yelp liked them. We first went there on 12/23 but there was a sign up that they were closed cause their oven had gone on the fritz. Went back mid-morning on the the 24th and the line was out the door. Since they were closing at noon for Christmas, the selection was pretty picked over. We only like non-fruit, vegetable bagels generally and I bought two of the last three salt bagels. Out of everything, etc. These bagels are boiled and then baked.

These bagels are the best we've ever had outside of NYC! How to describe a great bagel? I don't know. Chewy but not rubbery? Definitely not soft. These people hit the mark. We're leaving here tomorrow but coming back for a night at the end of the week. We'll be taking home a couple of dozen (hopefully we'll have more choice if we get there early in the morning). And this is a lot closer than going to New York.

I highly recommend Homegrown Bagels to anyone in the area of Sonoma.

ETA: They have seating and have bagel sandwiches with coffee, etc.. They also serve pizza at night.
