Home Cooking Dish of the Month - GADO-GADO, August 2021

Welcome to DOTM reporting thread for August 2021! Our group picked GADO-GADO, a dish perfect for eating in hot temperatures, but also tasty enough to enjoy year round.

Gado-gado literally means “hodgepodge,” and that’s exactly what it is. An Indonesian dish, it includes a mix of vegetables, greens, and/or proteins that are stir-fried, steamed, or otherwise prepared and then coated or dipped in a thick, rich peanut sauce. While Wikipedia describes gado-gado as a salad, you can also think of it as similar to France’s grand aioli. It’s basically a good opportunity to clear all of those extra veggies out of your fridge, cook up some hard-boiled eggs, fried tofu, or tempeh to add some heft, and cover it all in a delicious sauce.

Please use this thread to report on the gado-gados you make this month (and in the future). In your reports, do share ingredients, methods, sources, inspirations, successes and failures, photos, and links to online recipes. I will be particularly anxious to hear about people’s experience with your sauces – I’ve been chasing a perfect peanut sauce I had back in grad school that I just have NOT been able to recreate. Per Chowhound rules, please do not post another author's recipe verbatim. You may, however, list ingredients and summarize technique in your own words.
