ah fall. cold, dark skies, fall leaves, heavy sweaters, and... BEER! the best beers of the year are made for the holiday season, and this time every year i love finding holiday micro's on draft and in bottle and tasting them for the first time. cool thing about seasonals is that they are different every year, and seems that a different winterbrau stands out every winter (or a couple anyway). so i ask you fellow chowhound (and beirhound i hope), what do you find particularly enjoyable this year? while there are many products yet to hit the shelves and taps, let me give an early nod to Hales Wee Heavy. this beer (and brewery) have long let me down, but i must say that the "young" - just tapped that day - sample i had at the brewery had great balance, sweetness and gravity that makes a winter beer great. best of all, they got rid of the "spices" that have always made this beer unquaffable. credit to the new brew meister bill, from the underrated big time brewery on the ave.
note to all- washington brewers guild cask beer festival is tomorrow, 10/27 at the snoqualmie room (or one of those rooms) at seattle center. www.washingtonbrewersguild.org fro more info. see you there!
