Helping a friend do research: Stats on Wine Drinking in the US?

Hi all--
First, I think this is the right place to post, as it is not about food, per se? If not, I'll repost to General Topics...

I have a friend who is writing up a business plan for a wine biz. Since I really am not supposed to talk about it, I can't give more details. He is trying to find some stats on wine-drinking in the US: consumption by state, wine consumer demographics, states w/largest pop of wine drinkers (CA aside), wine volume consumption/sales by state and so forth. The problem is, I, as his research ass't, cannot find a whole lot online that doesn't cost $600+! (which he, as a start up really can't afford) There are a few sites you can pay ~$100/yr for, and if there were one or two that are really worth it, I think he'd spring for membership.

Maybe it is simply impossible to find out these stats? If so, and you know that, please do tell! Anyway, I figured CH has been an awesome resource for me for recipes, restos recs and so on, so perhaps I'd find out something here.

Thanks!
