Heaven on a "rice" Plate!

jd | Nov 14, 2005 03:26 PM

I finally made it to Wiki Wiki Hawaiian BBQ on Shattuck between Haste and Channing. I feel so fortunate to have a really good plate lunch restaurant so close to home!!! I had a combo plate with lau lau and kalua pig and a spam musubi on the side. With a can of Hawiian Sun, the whole meal was $12 and change.
When I ordered, I thought that the musubi was overpriced , but it was huge! And served warm! I am so used to ice cold musubi. The kalua pig was awesome, salty, porky and moist with little nuggets of creamy gelatinous pork fat. Outstanding. The portion size was ample but not gut busting. The rice and mac salad were good. I prefer mac salad with canned tuna in it, but this one was fine. Sweet and creamy. The real treasure though was the lau lau. I have never had such a good one on the mainland. I told the guy at the shop that the lau lau were as good as the ones at Ono in Waikiki, and he said that that is actually where they get them!
I can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu. The short ribs looked really tasty!
The place is clean. Efficient and really friendly. If you like plate lunch (and judging from past threads on this board, there are lots of you out there) give this place a try.
