hearty breakfast at The Neighborhood (long)

Had a great breakfast at The Neighborhood in Somerville (Bow St., Union Sq.) today. I hadn’t been here before but I had heard the locals love it. They have a pretty big patio and we took full advantage of the gorgeous weather and sat out there under the sun. Many tables have umbrellas for the light sensitive; we were in the mood to bake.

Breakfast fare is pretty average, on par with a good diner. It’s not so houndy, but it’s a great regular ole breakfast option. Today in addition to the page of regular breakfast plates, they also had a full page of specials. All your favorite breakfast options are on the menu, along with many with a Portuguese emphasis. I had the Mexican omelet special; ground beef, green peppers, sour cream, and tomatoes with a side of rice and beans. My partner in crime had a mushroom and cream cheese omelet from the regular menu.

Included with breakfast are your choice of fruit or cream of wheat. We both chose fruit, but they brought over some cream of wheat for us to try. I can take or leave cream of wheat ordinarily but this was wonderful. I wish I knew how they got the consistency to be so close to tapioca pudding. It was lightly sweetened with honey and sprinkled lightly with cinnamon. We both really enjoyed it. The fruit today was watermelon, which surprisingly tasted this early in the season.

Also included is orange juice and sweet breads. When our omelets arrived we also received a plate of breads – banana muffin, toast, croissant, and corn bread.

We also got mimosas, which were served in 25 oz. glasses… It was a *very* leisurely walk home.

I enjoyed mine – the omelet was perfectly cooked. My partner liked his too and was happy that the mushrooms were abundant. My breakfast special was $13, my pal’s plate was $6.99 and the mimosa’s were $2.50. A total bargain. I don’t think I’ll be able to work up an appetite to eat again until tomorrow. The staff was very friendly. The patio was comfortable, even quiet and peaceful. I will go again. Maybe some of y’all in need of serious weekend fortification will also enjoy.
