I grew up in Marlow Heights, Maryland, a stone's throw from Southeast DC, in the 1960s and 1970s. During the late 1960s, a restaurant opened on St. Barnabas Road called "Heap Big Beef". It was a chain based in the midwest, I believe, and featured a small menu of roast beef sandwiches, french fries, fried pies, and shakes and sodas. Its competitor then was Arby's and Roy Rogers. To this day, I still feel in my personal opinion the roast beef sandwiches from Heap Big Beef were superior, followed by Roy Rogers, then Arby's (who served french fires back then, made out of re-hydrated potatoes - and were actually tasty). Unfortunately, that same Summer of 1967 or 1968, alongside it opened a place called the Red Barn. Heap Big Beef couldn't compete and closed within a couple of years. Anyone else remember this place?
