i read jim's recent trip experience.
i was there on sunday june 10 at about 5:30. the liine at Pepe's was pretty big. sallys was full inside but had no line. i ate at sally's. when we walked out, sallys had a line of maybe 10 people, and pepes had a line of 25-30.
when i came thru again on friday june 22...at about 7:55pm, pepe's had a huge line. i called ahead and ordered a regular pie to go. good but not transcendent. then again, the take-out was made at "the spot" his expansion place next door. i never liked the pizza at pepe's the spot as much as in the real pepe's different ovens.
so, i think they still get pretty damned huge crowds. and ive always bumped into occasional slow times.
as for the pizza itself...well, i always prefer pepes to sallys. sally has to burn the pizza more in order to achieve the same level of crispness. on the last visit they overcheesed the pizza, and i agree with JL that the clam pie was not that tasty. it was disappointing.
