Hartwell House - my poor mom

I decided to take Mom to Hartwell House for a nice & quaint suburban lunch. I think recommendations were based on a former reputation that this place was good at one point. THE MOST bland food, clueless waitstaff, boring menu & a customers whose average age was well-past retirement.

Order was taken 25 minutes after we sat down, this affair was more like a wedding. We had four choices of meals, meat, fish, chicken, veggie. Shredded lettuce on a plate passes as an appetizer?? Broiled salmon with NO spice & no flavor. I've had better service at mcdonalds, we watched our drink order sit on a tray for 10 minutes while our waiter went elsewhere and appeared every 10-15 minutes to ask us what we wanted for our next course . . . seriously, the whole experience reminded me of a poorly catered wedding. The chicken was dry, not a shocker there, but put some sauce on the thing, or something, culinary skills 101 here!! Every meal came with the same vegetable & same potato.
Service basics: if you're not going to bring out the food for an hour, or drinks for 20 minutes, keep the water glasses full, or at least make an appearance.

In general, the food was flavorless. What type of cuisine is it considered?

Where did this reputation come from that this is a good place to dine? Is it outdated? Was it good at one point? Total waste, I felt like apologizing to mom after dinner, but at least she got to see me which made up for everything else.
