Harris Steak House -- Good not Great

SF-Glen | Oct 9, 2004 04:16 AM

Ended up here on Friday night on a friend's expense account; never been before. Nice that 4 could walk in at 7:30 w/o reservation and be seated immediately.

Service was a tad slow but not too bad. We each ordered a martini (2 proper and 2 vodka); very nice.

I had a caesar salad which was very good. A bit over dressed but tangy, and the anchovie was a nice touch.

Steaks were somewhat disappointing. All came out cooked beyond order (orders ranged from rare to medium) My ribeye ($33) was ordered medium rare and was served definitely medium. The side of mash potatoes was marginal, but that is not why you go to Harris's. Should have gotten some creamed spinach.

The 2 who ordered Steak Diane reported that it was very good and the 4th (Steve) never surfaced from the size-of-your-head porterhouse.

Never saw the wine list. Can only report that the 2 bottles ordered seemed very good. However, was pretty well oiled by then.

No dessert. All 4 of us were in meat comas by the end.

Overall, not going to rush back, but a positive experience. A bit pricey, and I thing the steak at either Chenery Park or Universal Cafe has more flavor. For that matter, the steak ranchero at Tommy's.

Bonus points for only charging $7 valet in that neighborhood.
